Why the same call closes at 10% or 70%
Discovery call close rate is the metric coaches blame themselves for most and control least. The single biggest input is not what you say on the call. It is where the person came from.
Warm referrals40–70%
Channel or event participants30–50%
Paid search14–18%
Cold outreach (unqualified)10–20%
- Warm referralsCloses at40–70%WhyTrust is already transferred
- Channel or event participantsCloses at30–50%WhyPre-warmed by exposure
- Paid searchCloses at14–18%WhyHigh intent, no relationship
- Cold outreach (unqualified)Closes at10–20%WhyNo intent, no relationship
What this means in practice
A coach closing 15% of calls from cold traffic is performing normally. A coach closing 15% of calls from warm referrals has a real problem on the call itself. Those two situations demand completely different fixes, and the raw close rate cannot tell them apart.
Before rebuilding your call script, segment by source. Most coaches who believe they are bad at sales are simply taking calls from people who never intended to buy.
What does move the number
- Specific niche positioningWhyProspects self-select before the call, so the people who book are already the right people.
- Clear articulation of outcomesWhyA buyer who can repeat what they get back to a partner or a finance director converts. One who cannot, does not.
- Pre-call intake questionnaireWhyForces the prospect to invest before the call and gives you the material to make it specific.
- Content-based price anchoringWhyIf your price first appears on the call, it is a surprise. If it appeared in your content, it is a known quantity.
- A defined next step at closeWhyCalls that end in "have a think" convert worse than calls that end in a decision either way.
Four of those five happen before the call starts. Discovery-call performance is mostly decided by positioning, qualification and pricing transparency, not by what you do in the room.
